Cryptography and Steganography
The aim of the research unit cryptography & steganography is to acquire and maintain expertise in these two areas for the benefit of the Defence. For cryptography, the research focuses on the follow-up of the state-of-the-art in symmetric cryptography and (post-)quantum cryptography and the verification of new cryptosystems.
Research in steganography mainly focuses on developing new and efficient methods for steganalysis, i.e. the detection of hidden information, in digital media.
Modelling, Simulation and Optimization
POC: LtCol Dr Ir Ben Lauwens
The Modelling, Simulation and Optimization (MSO) research unit uses models (i.e. mathematical or logical abstractions) of a system consisting of entities and/or processes as a basis for simulations to generate data that can be utilized for managerial or technical decision making. We do academic research in the theory of MSO, we look for generic engineering solution patterns of MSO and we apply MSO to solve real world military and civilian problems.
Hyperspectral Imaging
POC: LtCol Prof. Dr lr Rob Haelterman
The hyperspectral research unit investigates the use of hyperspectral imaging for Security and Defense applications including tactical target detection, surveillance mapping, chemical and biological warfare, hazmat, chemicals identification and atmospheric modelling. Spectral based dedicated algorithms and tools are developed and implemented to imaging data in the visible and the thermal infra-red domains. A continuous effort is also invested in the fusion of hyperspectral data with other state-of-the-art sensors, such as SAR, LIDAR, optical and thermal images in the scope of security and defence applications.
xR Laboratory
POC: LtCol Prof. Dr lr Rob Haelterman
The xR Lab conducts fundamental research in the field of extended reality (i.e. Informed, Augmented, Mixed and Virtual Reality). Different sensors are linked to smart glasses and Artificial Intelligence is used to provide the user with useful information in an intuitive way.
There is also close cooperation with the different units and components of the Defence in order to test xR solutions for the different needs on the basis of short development cycles.
